The IRC Wiki is 2 years old!

The IRC Wiki was founded by me and Bertrum exactly 2 years ago on this day and you can read the brief history about it here. The about page doesn't cover everything and there are a few little known facts and Easter eggs lurking within the Wiki that never got shared, either because of laziness or because it was embarrassing at the time. Now as a present to all of you, we'll share a few of both today.

First let's cover the little known facts:

• We didn't pick the name for vanity or arrogant reasons. We're just very very bad at naming things.
• My first reaction to being featured on irc-junkie.org was "That Bastard!"
• Of all the other IRC related wiki's mentioned in the above article, we're the only one still around.
• Jonas Thiem (MrJones) that commented on that article later joined us and merged his wiki into ours.
• Our LionWiki install was probably the only MediaWiki-like copy out there, with a custom created theme, sidebar, Emulated MediaWiki-like syntax and even rewrite rules.
• We had to move the articles from LionWiki to MediaWiki by hand - there was no way to transfer them into the database automatically. Bertrum and I did it in about an hour.
• Most of you may know that Bertrum wrote most of the Articles. What you may not know is that Bertrum had to rewrite most of them to fit the new format created by MrJones.
• I stole the coloured boxes code used on the Main Page.
• The current blue theme came about by accident when Bertrum created a new temporary logo and we needed something to fit it. I went crazy with the css doing mass replacements with the text editor. The current theme is the end result.
• The IRC Wiki is probably the only collaborative wiki where unassociated developers are allowed to create their own articles about their software. It's probably the only wiki that has this. Period.
• I originally resisted the idea of creating Network pages. I finally gave in a year later.
• The network box uses a customized inline code used with the older Dynamic Page List extension since this feature only appears within the newest copy of it (which isn't compatible with our older version of MediaWiki).
• We were the first project to use Janus to have our channel on multiple networks. We survived two prior such InterJanus links (to JanusIRC and then JanusChat) before creating our own Janus bot and custom coding it.

Now on to the Easter Eggs not featured on our how to add your network page:

• Chatbox widget for external QwebIRC & Iris Webchats
• LightIRC widget for external LightIRC Webchats

It has came along way since March, and over all use & activity has dramatically increased with the addition of some new features, when we last checked in March IRC-Wiki was at:

Ah, so we had a slight activity burst the last few months. I think this is the trick to being semi-popular and how all the larger wiki's started. You just have to get over the hump of the first few years.
