    Omega IRC Security 0.7.7 released

While this post is a bit late, it may be useful for those of you who follow the Omega project.

In February, Omega 0.7.7 was released<ref>, how ever there was no noticeable news post out lining changes made to the software. The Omega home page also states that "After a long period of inactivity we are pleased to announce omega services is going to be picked back up, and return to active development"<ref>.

Omega may also serve as an ideal replacement for those looking to replace IRC Defender after the recent exploit<ref>.

I don't really see the point -- what does Omega do that a proper IRCd does not? Or for that matter: that Anope or Atheme does not when configured properly?

Personally I have never used it properly on my network, I don't see the point in using it, InspIRCd and our BOPM does a good enough job.

However I suppose some people use it for a false sense of security, or maybe even curiosity.

That's probably because their UID code is based on the broken Anope 1.7/1.8 implementation.

I doubt they will fix it correctly. The Anope guys didn't understand why their implementation was flawed in the first place, for example. Despite, you know, having tons of people try to explain it to them. w00t just quietly replaced all that crap in 1.9 so that 1.9 does it "the right way." Omega clearly has Anope 1.7/1.8-style design...

despite the fact that you guys and or trixar_za has told me about omega services is good on attacks... it doesn't scan for proxies... is ti my mistake on something in the configs or the developers didn't make it throught there?

BOPM is the best software to use as a proxy scanner imo

Actually it's "best" to scan with the local ircd. It saves resources everywhere because the ircd can remove the user before they even register instead of reacting to a user than has already registered and has been broadcasted.

katsklaw: Which only it adds overhead to the IRCd - this is why some IRCds have a separate process for it.

BlackDragon: I said it was a better alternative to IRC Defender which has an execution exploit and which you were running at the time. I never said it could replace BOPM just yet.
